Why Calculating Bet Returns Yourself Goes Wrong
Working out returns on a Single is easy multiply the stake by the odds and subtract the stake. But beyond that, the maths gets complicated fast. These are the mistakes punters make time and again when trying to calculate manually:
- Wrong line count on full-cover bets. A Yankee has 11 lines, not 4. A Lucky 15 has 15, a Heinz has 57, a Super Heinz has 120, and a Goliath has 247. Miscounting the lines means your stake calculation is wrong before you even start. The calculator generates every combination automatically so you always know the exact total stake.
- Getting each-way place odds wrong. Place odds are not the same as win odds. They depend on the place fraction (1/4, 1/5, or 1/10) set by the bookmaker for that race and number of runners. Calculating them manually for every selection in a six-horse Patent is tedious and error-prone. The calculator handles per-selection place fractions independently.
- Confusing Per Line stake with Total Stake. When a bookie says “£1 Lucky 15”, they mean £1 per line which is £15 total. When you see “£15 total Lucky 15”, that is only £1 per line. Getting these mixed up leads to betting double what you intended or half what you needed. Both stake modes are supported so you can enter whichever figure you know.
- Not knowing which lines pay after a non-runner or loser. In a multi-selection bet, losing one selection does not necessarily void the entire bet. A Yankee with one loser still pays on the nine remaining doubles and treble. The calculator lets you mark each selection as Win, Placed (each-way), or Lose and shows the return on every remaining active line.
- Miscalculating accumulator returns on long-priced selections. Multiplying five decimal odds together by hand especially after applying place fractions is where most errors creep in. The calculator chains them together precisely, showing both the win return and the place return separately.
Every UK Bet Type Explained
The calculator supports all thirteen standard UK bet types. Here is exactly what each one contains and when punters use it:
Single
One selection, one outcome. The simplest bet in bookmaking your stake on one event at the stated odds. Returns are stake × decimal odds if the selection wins. Use the calculator when betting each-way on a single to see both the win and place parts clearly separated.
Double
Two selections combined into one bet. Both must win (or be placed, for the each-way place part) for the bet to return a profit. The combined odds are the product of both selections’ decimal odds. One line, two selections.
Treble
Three selections combined. All three must win for a full return. One line, three selections. Trebles are the building block of most full-cover bets and are popular on Saturday football and ante-post horse racing.
Accumulator (4–12 Selections)
All selected legs combined into a single multi. The calculator supports 4-fold through to 12-fold accumulators. All selections must win for the bet to pay in full one loser kills the entire return on the win side. Each-way accumulators can still return something on the place side even with one loser, which the calculator reflects correctly when you mark that selection as Placed.
Patent (7 Lines 3 Selections)
A Patent covers every combination from three selections: 3 Singles + 3 Doubles + 1 Treble = 7 lines. Because Singles are included, a Patent returns something even if only one selection wins. Popular for horse racing days where you have three strong fancies but want insurance against the others losing. At £1 per line, total stake is £7.
Yankee (11 Lines 4 Selections)
A Yankee covers 4 selections without Singles: 6 Doubles + 4 Trebles + 1 Four-Fold = 11 lines. At least two selections must win for any return. The most popular full-cover bet without singles in UK betting shops and online. Total stake at £1 per line: £11.
Lucky 15 (15 Lines 4 Selections)
A Lucky 15 is a Yankee plus 4 Singles all 15 possible combinations from four selections. One winner produces a return, making it a more forgiving version of the Yankee. Many bookmakers offer bonuses on Lucky 15s: a percentage increase if all four selections win. Total stake at £1 per line: £15.
Canadian / Super Yankee (26 Lines 5 Selections)
A Canadian covers 5 selections without Singles: 10 Doubles + 10 Trebles + 5 Four-Folds + 1 Five-Fold = 26 lines. At least two selections must win for any return. Total stake at £1 per line: £26.
Lucky 31 (31 Lines 5 Selections)
A Lucky 31 is a Canadian plus 5 Singles all 31 combinations from five selections. One winner guarantees a return. Total stake at £1 per line: £31.
Heinz (57 Lines 6 Selections)
Named after the famous 57 varieties, a Heinz covers all combinations from six selections except Singles: 15 Doubles + 20 Trebles + 15 Four-Folds + 6 Five-Folds + 1 Six-Fold = 57 lines. Total stake at £1 per line: £57.
Lucky 63 (63 Lines 6 Selections)
A Lucky 63 adds 6 Singles to a Heinz, covering all 63 possible combinations from six selections. One winner returns something. Many bookmakers offer bonus payouts if all six selections win. Total stake at £1 per line: £63.
Super Heinz (120 Lines 7 Selections)
A Super Heinz covers all combinations from seven selections except Singles: 21 Doubles + 35 Trebles + 35 Four-Folds + 21 Five-Folds + 7 Six-Folds + 1 Seven-Fold = 120 lines. Total stake at £1 per line: £120.
Goliath (247 Lines 8 Selections)
The largest standard UK bet type. A Goliath covers all combinations from eight selections except Singles: 28 Doubles + 56 Trebles + 70 Four-Folds + 56 Five-Folds + 28 Six-Folds + 8 Seven-Folds + 1 Eight-Fold = 247 lines. Even at pennies per line, a Goliath requires a meaningful total stake. Total stake at £1 per line: £247.
Each-Way Bets How the Calculator Handles Them
Ticking Each-Way doubles your stake you place one bet on the selection to win and a separate identical bet on it to be placed. The win part pays at full odds; the place part pays at a reduced fraction of the win odds, set by the bookmaker.
Our calculator handles each-way bets by letting you set each selection’s result independently:
- Win – the selection won. Both the win and place parts of the each-way bet pay out in full.
- Placed -the selection finished in a place position but did not win. The win part is lost; the place part pays at the place fraction odds.
- Lose -the selection was unplaced. Both parts of the each-way bet are lost for any combination containing that selection.
The place fraction (1/4, 1/5, or 1/10) is applied per selection, allowing you to reflect accurately when different races on the same day have different place terms. Place odds are calculated as: (decimal odds − 1) × place fraction + 1.
How to Use the UK Bet Calculator
- Choose your bet type. Select from the dropdown Single, Double, Treble, Accumulator, or any of the full-cover bets from Patent through to Goliath. For an Accumulator, an additional field appears to set the number of selections (4 to 12).
- Set your stake mode. Choose Per Line if you know what you want to stake on each individual combination. Choose Total Stake if you want to enter the total amount you are putting on the whole bet the calculator divides it equally across all lines.
- Enter your stake. For Per Line this is the amount per combination. For Total Stake this is your total outlay. The calculator shows you the exact total stake used in the results summary.
- Tick Each-Way if applicable. Each-way doubles your effective stake per line. Per-selection place fraction dropdowns appear once you tick this box, letting you set 1/4, 1/5, or 1/10 per selection independently.
- Enter each selection’s decimal odds and set its result Win, Placed, or Lose. The Placed option only appears when Each-Way is ticked.
- Click Calculate Returns. The summary cards at the top show total lines, total stake, total return, and net profit at a glance. Tick “Show all bet lines” to reveal the full breakdown table with every individual combination’s stake, return, and profit.
5 Things Sharp Punters Check Before Placing a Multiple
- Confirm the total stake before submitting. A Lucky 63 at £1 per line costs £63 but at £2 per line it costs £126. Always check the Total Stake card in the results before you walk to the counter or click Confirm.
- Check the place terms for every race separately. Different races on the same card can have different place terms. A field of 16+ runners typically pays 1/4 odds on the first four places; smaller fields pay 1/5 on three places or 1/4 on two. Enter the correct fraction per selection to get accurate each-way returns.
- Use Total Stake mode when reconstructing a received slip. If someone hands you a betting slip showing a total cost and you want to verify the returns, enter the full amount in Total Stake mode and let the calculator divide it correctly.
- Run the calculator before each-way decisions on expensive bets. That each-way Lucky 15 costs £30 instead of £15. Use the calculator to compare win-only versus each-way returns at different odds to decide whether the insurance is worth the extra cost for your specific selections.
- Use the line-by-line table to understand non-runner impact. Before a race, run the bet with one selection marked as Lose to see what your remaining return looks like if that horse is withdrawn. It helps you decide whether to take the non-runner rule or cash out.

UK Bet Calculator Frequently Asked Questions
How many lines are in a Yankee, Lucky 15, Heinz, and Goliath?
A Yankee (4 selections, no singles) = 11 lines. A Lucky 15 (4 selections with singles) = 15 lines. A Canadian/Super Yankee (5 selections, no singles) = 26 lines. A Lucky 31 (5 selections with singles) = 31 lines. A Heinz (6 selections, no singles) = 57 lines. A Lucky 63 (6 selections with singles) = 63 lines. A Super Heinz (7 selections, no singles) = 120 lines. A Goliath (8 selections, no singles) = 247 lines. The calculator generates every combination automatically you never need to count manually.
What is the difference between Per Line and Total Stake?
Per Line means your entered stake is placed on each individual combination in the bet. A £1 per line Lucky 15 costs £15 total (15 lines × £1). Total Stake means you enter the entire amount you want to spend and the calculator divides it equally across all lines. A £15 Total Stake Lucky 15 is therefore £1 per line and costs the same total both modes produce identical line stakes in this example. Use Per Line when you think in terms of points or unit stakes; use Total Stake when you know the exact budget you want to commit.
How does each-way work on a multiple bet like a Yankee?
An each-way Yankee is effectively two separate Yankees one on all selections to win and one on all selections to be placed at place fraction odds. Every combination is duplicated: a Yankee therefore becomes 22 bets and the total stake doubles. If one selection is placed but does not win, the win half of every combination containing that selection is lost, but the place half of those combinations still pays out at the reduced place odds. The calculator reflects this correctly when you mark that selection as Placed rather than Win.
What are place fraction odds and which should I choose?
Place fraction odds are a reduced version of the win odds applied to the place part of an each-way bet. The standard fractions are 1/4 (quarter odds), 1/5 (fifth odds), and 1/10 (tenth odds). The fraction depends on the number of runners and the specific race: handicaps and large fields usually pay 1/4 the win odds on four places; smaller fields typically pay 1/5 or 1/4 on two or three places. Your bookmaker’s race card will state the place terms for each race. If different races in your multiple have different terms, set each selection’s fraction individually in the calculator.
What happens to a multiple bet if one selection loses?
Any combination that contains the losing selection returns nothing on the win side. In a full-cover bet like a Lucky 15, the combinations that do not include the loser continue to pay normally. For example, a Lucky 15 with one loser and three winners still pays, because those three winners form winning singles, doubles, and a treble between them. Mark the loser as Lose in the calculator and every remaining line is recalculated instantly so you can see exactly what is still to come.
Can I use this calculator to check a bookmaker’s payout?
Yes enter exactly the same selections, odds, stake mode, and stake amount that are on your betting slip, mark each selection Win, Placed, or Lose based on the official result, and the calculator will tell you the correct total return. If the bookmaker’s figure is different from the calculator’s, the difference is usually explained by an enhanced odds promotion, a Rule 4 deduction (for non-runners, which this calculator does not apply automatically), or a dead-heat reduction. If none of those apply, you have grounds to query the payout with the bookmaker.
