Work Out Exactly How Much to Bet
Backing winners is only half the battle. Without a disciplined staking plan, even a profitable tipster’s selections can leave your betting bank in the red. Our staking plan calculator removes the guesswork – enter your bankroll, pick your preferred method, and get a precise recommended stake in seconds.

Why Most Punters Bleed Their Bank Dry (Even When They’re Winning)
Ask any experienced punter and they’ll tell you the same thing: good tips alone won’t save you. These are the five most common bankroll mistakes that stop bettors from ever showing a long-term profit – and exactly how a structured staking plan fixes each one.
- Chasing losses with bigger bets. After a losing run, the temptation is to “get it back” by doubling up. This is the fastest way to wipe out a bank. A fixed percentage plan keeps every stake proportional to what you actually have left – so a losing streak shrinks your stakes automatically, giving you time to recover.
- Betting the same amount whatever the odds. A £20 bet on a 1.20 shot risks far more than £20 on a 5.00 shot in real terms – because the probability of loss is almost four times higher. The Kelly Criterion adjusts your stake for the specific odds and your edge, so you’re never over-exposed at short prices.
- No idea what “high confidence” is worth in pounds. Tipsters talk about 1-point, 2-point, 3-point bets – but what does that actually mean for your bank? The percentage staking method turns confidence levels directly into cash amounts. Rate a selection “Very High” and the calculator tells you the exact stake, whatever your bankroll size.
- Inconsistent staking wiping out ROI. A tipster showing +8% ROI over 500 bets can still lose money if you bet randomly large on losers and small on winners. Consistent staking – whether fixed or percentage-based – is the only way to actually capture the ROI a service produces.
- Using Kelly and going broke anyway. Full Kelly is mathematically optimal but emotionally brutal – it can recommend staking 30–40% of your bank on a single bet. Our calculator caps Kelly at 25% and also shows Half and Quarter Kelly so you can choose a volatility level you can actually stick to.
The 3 Staking Methods – Which One Is Right for You?
1. Percentage Staking
Best for: horse racing punters, football accumulators, matched bettors building a bank from scratch.
With percentage staking you bet a set proportion of your current bankroll on every selection – typically between 1% and 5%. Because the stake is always calculated from the live bank balance, it shrinks during losing runs and grows as your bank builds. This makes it the most naturally protective method for punters who have a genuine edge over the long run.
How to use it in the calculator: Enter your total bankroll, select Percentage Staking, and type your chosen percentage. The results table shows stakes for Very High through to Low confidence, so you can scale up or down bet by bet without doing any maths.
Pros:
- Self-adjusting – protects the bank in a losing run automatically.
- Scales up naturally as your bank grows.
- Easy to explain and easy to stick to.
Cons:
- You will never go broke, but you will also never hit a round-number stake.
- Requires discipline to recalculate after every bet rather than settling on a fixed figure.
2. Fixed Staking
Best for: football bettors tracking ROI, tipster subscribers following a points system, matched bettors running consistent qualifying bets.
Fixed staking means betting the same cash amount – say £25 – on every selection regardless of the bank balance. It’s the simplest method and the easiest for tracking a tipster’s ROI because every bet is worth exactly “one point”.
How to use it in the calculator: Enter your bankroll and your intended fixed stake. The results table shows what multiples of that stake look like – useful if you want to scale up on a particularly strong selection without losing your staking discipline.
Pros:
- Dead simple to execute – same amount every time.
- Perfect for following point-based tipster services.
- Makes ROI tracking clean and consistent.
Cons:
- Does not protect the bank during a losing run – stakes do not auto-reduce.
- As a percentage of your bank, fixed stakes become increasingly aggressive when the bank shrinks.
3. Kelly Criterion Calculator
Best for: value bettors, matched bettors quantifying their edge, experienced horse racing and football punters who can estimate win probability.
The Kelly Criterion is a mathematical formula that calculates the mathematically optimal stake based on two things: the odds on offer and your honest estimate of the selection’s true probability of winning. If you genuinely have an edge – the true probability is higher than the odds imply – Kelly tells you exactly how much of your bank to commit.
The formula is:
Kelly % = ( (Decimal Odds − 1) × Win Probability − Loss Probability ) ÷ (Decimal Odds − 1)
How to use it in the calculator: Enter your bankroll, select Kelly Criterion, enter the decimal odds available, and enter your estimated win probability as a percentage. The calculator returns Full Kelly, Half Kelly (50% of Full), and Quarter Kelly (25% of Full). If your probability estimate implies no edge, it will tell you not to bet rather than suggest a losing stake.
A word of caution: Kelly is only as good as your probability estimate. Overestimate your edge and Kelly will over-stake dangerously. Most professional bettors use Half Kelly or Quarter Kelly to manage variance while retaining the mathematical advantages of the system.
Pros:
- Mathematically optimal growth of any staking plan, given accurate inputs.
- Scales stake intelligently with the size of your edge.
- Will never suggest a bet with no positive expected value.
Cons:
- Demands an honest, well-calibrated probability estimate.
- Full Kelly produces extreme variance – Half or Quarter Kelly is safer for most punters.
How to Use the Staking Plan Calculator
- Enter your total bankroll. This is the total pot you have set aside for betting – not your life savings, not your rent money. A dedicated betting bank, even if it starts at £100.
- Choose your staking method. New to staking plans? Start with Percentage Staking at 2%. If you follow a tipster’s point system, use Fixed Staking. If you assess every selection’s probability yourself, try Kelly Criterion.
- Fill in the method-specific fields.
- Percentage: Enter your chosen percentage (1–5% is sensible for most punters).
- Fixed: Enter the flat cash amount you stake per bet.
- Kelly: Enter the decimal odds and your estimated win probability as a percentage.
- Click “Calculate My Stakes”. The calculator instantly shows your recommended stake and a full confidence table so you can scale up or down based on how strongly you rate specific selections.
- Use the table as your staking reference. Screenshot it or bookmark the page. Every time you want to place a bet, map your confidence level to the corresponding stake in the table.
5 Bankroll Management Rules Every Punter Should Follow
- Never bet more than 5% of your bank on a single selection. Even professional bettors with well-documented edges rarely exceed 3%. The more you protect the downside, the longer you stay in the game.
- Treat your betting bank as a separate account. The moment your betting money mingles with everyday spending, discipline collapses. Open a separate e-wallet or bank account and only fund betting from there.
- Recalculate your stakes monthly, not daily. With percentage staking, recalculating after every single bet adds admin and tempts you to tinker. A monthly reset keeps stakes consistent while still reflecting your true bank balance.
- Track every bet, including the stakes. You cannot improve what you do not measure. A simple spreadsheet with date, selection, odds, stake, and result will reveal whether your staking plan is working – or whether your edge is smaller than you think.
- Never chase losses by breaking your plan. A staking plan works over hundreds of bets, not dozens. The worst thing you can do after five consecutive losers is abandon the system. Trust the maths and stick to your calculated stakes.
